This week (January 16-23) marks the 111th anniversary of the infamous Jersey Devil Rampage of 1909. During this hellish week, there were over 1,000 panic fueled reports of cloven footprints, eyewitness sightings, harrowing trolly car attacks, and even police firing upon an alleged beast to no effect. Widespread newspaper coverage of these encounters caused a bit of Devil hysteria that saw businesses and schools close throughout areas of New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. This mass fear led to the formation of several vigilante posses that combed the region for the creature. The Philly Zoo even posted a $10,000 bounty on the Devil's head, but it only yielded hoax attempts and an unfortunate, painted kangaroo adorned with fake wings and claws.
